STUDENT RECOMMENDATION

Glimmer Ng was my first saxophone teacher, and working with her was a truly enriching experience. She taught me invaluable techniques for practicing difficult passages, which significantly improved my playing. She always asked for my input on what I wanted to work on, ensuring our sessions were tailored to my needs, especial as a French Canadian with language barrier. Her lessons were never stressful; she knew how to make the sessions relevant and enjoyable.

It was a pleasure to be her student.

I am a saxophonist currently admitted to The University of Toronto for music performance program. I also am a musician in the Canadian Armed Forces as a member of the Band of the Ceremonial Guard which is the premier band of the Canadian Armed Forces, I am also a graduate of the Arts Unionville High School intensive arts program, and a former student at Queen’s university in the music con-ed/performance program. Though the key to these success has been hard work and determination, a great amount of credit is owed to my private instructor, Glimmer Ng. I can confidently say that I would have never achieved any of this without the support of Glimmer. I know she will bring the same success to other students if given the opportunity.

I am a fourth year music student majoring in Jazz Performance at Humber College. I have had the pleasure of studying with Glimmer Ng and can honestly say it has been one of the best learning experiences in my career not only as a military musician within the Canadian Armed Forces but as a professional gigging musician as well. Meeting Glimmer I did not know what to expect from her as a teacher, or a person, especially in a military setting, but I was pleasantly surprised in both aspects. I am extremely fortunate to have met Glimmer and gotten to know her on a personal and professional level. I feel I am a better player, working musician, and person because of it.

I am entering the final year of a Bachelor of Music having spent the previous years studying saxophone in solo performance, large and small ensemble contexts, a pursuit which I am all the better equipped to complete having profited from Ms. NG’s teachings. I benefitted greatly from her intimate knowledge of these pieces and her firsthand experience performing them. To further increase the degree of musicality, I was provided with exercises in tone development allowing the application of the different tonal colours of the saxophone to appropriate sections of pieces. She identified and corrected poor habits of mine such as points of excess tension as well as aiding with performance anxiety and presence. On a personal level, Ms. NG was outgoing and developed a strong rapport with me during our lessons. I never felt worried about showing my progress but also trusted that my deficiencies would always be met with honest critique and effective solutions.
